Planning a Trip on a Budget By LaToya Irby- SHINE writer and About.com contributor
You've fantasized about summer vacation all year long, but the recession has killed your budget. Don't despair, you can take a fabulous, yet frugal trip to many of the nation's hottest destinations.
Start by setting a budget based on what you can spend. Next, pick a destination plus a few backups. That way, if your top pick is too expensive, you have some other options.
Decide how you're going to get there. If you're flying, look for cheap flights on Expedia or Priceline. Compare airfare prices to the cost of driving by using FuelCostEstimator.com. If you're traveling with friends, divide the fuel cost among everyone to make it even cheaper.
When it comes to picking a hotel, mingle with tourists, but don't sleep with them. Tourist areas are always more expensive, while just a few blocks away, things are priced more reasonably. To get the best rates, pick a hotel that's a few blocks away from the main tourist area and don't forget to ask about discounts. Bunk with your friends to lower the cost even more. Follow the same technique as lodging for dining.
In the tourist areas, restaurants are often overrated, overcrowded, and overpriced. Walk or drive just outside the tourist area for to save on meals. A lot of people are inclined to outfit themselves in new clothes before jetting away. Your old clothes will be just as new to anyone who sees you on vacation. Save that money for something else.
Plan your daily activities ahead of time. While you're planning your trip, use the internet to look for activities you can afford. Make sure you look for free options like museums and parks and avoid sidewalk sales pitches for pricey tours.
Traveling on a budget forces you to be creative with your trip and that can make it more fun. Don't be bummed that you can't spend a fortune on your trip. Remember that you can always come back in the future when you're better off financially.

This is do-able for me. I can really relate to this story as a "broke" college student. A lot of my friends are graduates (recent) and it's funny cause they can relate too. We are trying to plan a trip for the end of summer....it's hard when money is low, but this seems like it works!

Trust me, it works. This is everything I did to pay for my last vacation and it turned out great.
