Deal with the Real - If it's Artificial, let it be July/August 2009 By Michael Mitchell- SHINE Contributor, Managing Editor
As the world turns and the sun rises, man creates a lot of distracting, time-consuming toys, like the television and the internet to name a few. These "toys" have the ability to be both beneficial and detrimental to your mental growth. Think about it, what do you spend most of your time doing? If you are anything like the norm you might watch T.V. But what do you watch? Do you watch Sportscenter, Family Guy, and Charm School or do you watch the History Channel and the News? Let's be honest, you probably know more about L.C.'s life on the Hills than you do about your own. Sorry for the harshness - just trying to make a point. I'm just saying, too many of us are unemployed to be wasting time watching VH1's "reality actress" New York, or socialite Parish Hilton work ridiculous jobs that they really don't need or chose friends that they will need more of next season. And what do you do while on the computer? Do you spend most of your time on social networking sites meeting new people that really you will never meet or are you using the internet as a research tool to gain knowledge? Don't get me wrong, you can find me on Myspace and Facebook too. But realistically, what is Myspace besides what the name implies?... My-Space. You spend a lot of time remodeling your space on the internet, when you probably have a bundle of clutter in your physical space, your house. So don't spend too much time playing Sims(simulation), instead keep it real (reality). To wrap things up, all I want to get off my chest is the importance of brain power and the substance of books for your everyday life. Aside from the social networking and the game playing online, books can assist you along the pathway to success. Why do you think they didn't want the slaves to read or write? It was to keep them just that: enslaved. Go liberate your mind people. Time is money, be cautious what you buy into.

Especially CNN! Sometimes you do have to filter the news also....I get so tired of them....just reporting stuff to get ratings.

I watch majority of those shows myself. Who doesnt watch sports center? As long as you know what reality is, there's no problem w/ watching reality shows. I'll be on one for the right $,,
