All Nat-U-Ral A quick look into Neo-Soul and all Things Natural
July/August 2009 - By Loren A. Simpson
Heavily matted coils of course hair, fusing themselves together creating long masses of dreads. When you think of someone with that "down-to-earth" Neo-soul and Natural Style, you smell the aroma of freshly lit incenses, a little Erykah Badu in the background, and several editions of the "black experience" along book shelves. Also known as "Nu Soul," Neo Soul came about as an extension of Contemporary R&B. The style mixes elements of old-school soul music into typical R&B. Like Hip Hop, Neo-Soul is more than a genre it's a lifestyle and culture. Hey young world,
You may find me easy going and effortless as I sport my earth tones, various browns, blues, reds, and yellows. And please believe prints are a must and take up most of my closet space! Like, those of snake and leopard that I love to pair with fiery oranges and saturated blues and purples. Cinched waists are also kept nearby, whether it's using a wide belt of piece of rope, I make it work and can funk up any piece or accessory to compliment my style.
So what's a day in my life? I've awaken heading straight to the bathroom beginning my daily beauty regimen: cleansing, toning, and moisturizing my skin with the use of natural products courtesy of Carol's Daughter. I have pulled my thick woolen-like tresses into a ponytail and have allowed my twists to fall down my back. Feeling jazzy, I've slipped into a pair of dark wash skinny jeans and
into a multi-colored Pucci-inspired mini. My feet are adorned with clunky gladiator sandals that go great with the way I feel: bold, yet cozy. It's nice out and I'm in desperate need of groceries so I'm headed down the block to the farmers market to pick up a few things - armed with my iPod full of Musiq Soul Child, Dwelle, Jill Scott, and Maxwell's "Pretty Wings" to name a few. Destination reached I get what I need then head home for a quick second to drop off my bags...Bonfire's at 5 p.m., so I have to get ready for that. Any other day, I'd probably be on my way to my set yoga class at the local gym. Before heading to the bonfire, my ponytail transitions into a low side bun and my body is now draped in a saturated teal tie-dyed wrap with my black and gold trim bikini underneath. I'm feelling free as a bird, one with nature, and sexy. And even though I do so effortlessly, I'm ready to make a statement with my own personal natural style...and tomorrow I will do it all over again.
Until next time....Peace,
Rachel Ross
Interested in pulling off my style?
The only way to pull off this style is to be sure to incorporate lots of vibrantly lush colors with earth tones, animal prints and of course a great pair of jeans are always good!
